
COUNCILMAN KENDALL B. STEWART
PRESIDENTIAL AWARD 2003
Kendall Stewart has dedicated himself to improving the quality of life for families in Brooklyn’s 45th Council District. He has served the community for twenty years as a community activist, local businessman and doctor and knows first hand the many problems the community faces due to lack of services. His missions as Councilman: Comprehensive services to seniors; provide access to every opportunity that is available; create better schools and support the youth of the community with tutoring and afterschool programs; increase job opportunities for all; improve health care; increase safety and police protection; get more affordable and accessible child care; improve the quality of life in the community; clean District’s streets, and provide access to immigration services.
Trained as a podiatrist, Dr. Stewart entered the political arena in 1992 when
he was elected to the Office of State Committeeman for the 58th Assembly District (which includes Flatbush, East Flatbush and Canarsie, Brooklyn). Since then, he has dedicated so much time attending to the needs of the people in his District that he asked his partner to take over most of the work in his medical practice.
A lifelong supporter of local youth, education, sports and community-based organizations, Dr. Stewart is active in legal clinics on immigration and citizenship; tutor programs in math and high school equivalency; sponsoring meals for senior citizens, and a referral service for community residents. He is active in several local groups including Borokeete U.S.A. (member); Caribbean American Sports and Cultural Youth Movement (board member and advisor); Little Rascals Soccer Club (sponsor);Sunjets Club (member); All Fours Alliance of America (board member); Hairoon Soccer Club (sponsor); Caricom East 56 Street Rummy Association (member), and the Rugby Domino Club (member).
Dr. Stewart is a member of many local political organizations: Kings County Democratic Club’s Executive Committee; Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and he is Chairman of the Wesley McDonald Health Association, Podiatric Medical Association and Medical Panel of Local Union 1199. Dr Stewart is also Advisor to the Guyanese Businessman and Professional Association. He is an alumnus of the City College of New York and the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, where he received a Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.). He is also certified in Computer Programming.
Married with five children, Kendall Stewart has lived, worked and raised his family in East Flatbush for the past twenty years. He was born in St. Vincent, West Indies on October 7, 1950. coming to this city of immigrants from a modest background, Dr. Stewart worked hard to take advantage of the opportunities that this, the greatest country in the world has to offer. As long as he has been here, he has helped people in every way that he can. Being a Councilman is an opportunity to serve even more and to give back to the community, for some of which he has been blessed. He will help to the best of his ability, to teach young people the value of hard work and what it takes to realize the American Dream.
Councilman Stewart is on the Aging, Contracts, General Welfare, Health, Housing, Women’s Issues Committees. He is also the Chair of the Councils Immigration sub committee. He will sponsor and support legislation which benefit the lives of New Yorkers. Councilman Stewart seeks to coordinate with his colleagues in the Council and every other person who can help to bring opportunities and services to the people of the City of New York. Dr. Stewart is working hard and as long as he is a Councilman, will continue to do as much as he can for as many people as he can. His staff and he are ready and willing to address every matter that anyone brings to their attention
