The first of six children for Gloria Chambers and her late husband Ronald Chambers. He was born in the district of Toll Gate, Clarendon, Jamaica, W.I. His father was the Principal of Toll Gate All Age School and his mother Assistant Principal.

In Jamaica, Michael attended the Toll Gate All Age School and Clarendon College High School. He represented his high school in soccer, track and field and cricket. His leadership skills fostered his ability to captain both his high school cricket team as well as the track and field team.

In July 1968, Michael migrated to the United States of America to further his education. He received an Associate degree in Electrical Engineering from Hartford State College, a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hartford, and a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut. He also pursued postgraduate studies in Power Systems Engineering at North- eastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. He joined the staff of Hamilton Standard, Windsor Locks, Connecticut, as an Electrical Engineer in 1979, and worked with the company for 15 years. Presently, he is a self- employed Real Estate Developer.

As a young cricketer in Jamaica, Mike was identified as a promising pace bowler and a very brilliant fieldsman who was able to score runs on occasion.
